Don’t let the name fool you — the scarecrows at this St. Libory farm are friendly faces. Gene and Sheila Horak converted their own family farm into a pumpkin patch in 2001 (they started in the 1980s selling melons and pumpkins at a highway produce stand, back when St. Libory had 22 melon stands). They “don’t do spooky” — this is good old-fashioned country fun, and the whole place has a home-grown feel.
The farm’s 13 original buildings were redone as play areas and attractions: a craft barn featuring 11 local artists, a petting zoo, games, an obstacle course, jumping pillows, a corn maze, and a tractor barrel ride. The signature invention is the Scarecrow Spinner — a homemade merry-go-round-style ride that Gene powers by hand, walking around a center pole twisting the ropes. Open mid-September through October 31st, Fridays through Sundays, a short drive north of Grand Island with free parking on site.
