Thunderhead has been pouring since 1999, which makes it one of the oldest craft breweries in Nebraska — old enough to remember when “Nebraska craft beer” was barely a phrase. The production brewery moved to Axtell in 2008, but the Kearney taproom is the public face, and it’s a proper dinner destination with wood-fired pizzas.
The beers lean into the agricultural setting: wheat beers like Golden Frau Honey Wheat and Prairie Peach Ale, plus Cornstalker Dark Wheat, brewed with Nebraska corn. Black Eye, the imperial porter, has picked up national awards. Nothing here is chasing trends; it’s farm-country beer made by people who’ve been doing it longer than almost anyone in the state.
Kearney is the natural halfway stop on I-80, and Thunderhead is the reason to get off the interstate.
