Harlan County Lake is south-central Nebraska’s big water. Nine miles long with 75 miles of shoreline, it’s a Corps of Engineers lake built for flood control on the Republican River, and the fishing is the main event: walleye, white bass, and wipers draw the crowds, with channel cats and pike filling out the card.

When the water drops low, the foundations of the original farmsteads flooded by the reservoir emerge from the mud — a strange, quiet reminder that whole communities once stood where you’re casting. Below the dam, the Republican River from the dam to Naponee is a classic summer tubing float, slow and easy.

The Corps parks around the lake are well-kept and affordable, with two full-service marinas on the east end. Note that Harlan has confirmed zebra mussels, so clean, drain, and dry your boat — it’s the law, and it matters here.
