Jeffrey Lake is what happens when a good fishery hides in plain sight. This 900-acre reservoir off I-80 at Brady gets a fraction of the pressure of the lakes around it, and the fishing is better than its anonymity suggests: walleye, white bass, wipers, crappie, and both channel and flathead catfish, plus sauger.
It’s a Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District lake, regulated for hydroelectric generation, so water levels move and the contours can make it tricky to navigate — take it slow until you learn it. Much of the shoreline is privately managed, so use the public access: a concrete ramp off Brady-Moorefield Road and a primitive ramp at the Jeffrey Canyon WMA.
It’s ideal small-boat and kayak water, and good from shore. The Potter’s Pasture bike and hiking trails run through nearby private land open to the public — a solid second act after the morning bite.
