Most of the Missouri River in Nebraska is a channelized ditch. The stretch at Ponca isn’t — it’s part of the Missouri National Recreational River, one of the last free-flowing, unchannelized reaches, with the same bluffs, chutes, and backwaters the Corps of Discovery floated past. That wildness is the point: catfish (channels and flatheads), sauger, walleye, and drum in real river current.
Ponca State Park gives you two boat ramps, a canoe/kayak launch, and three miles of river access, plus a fishing tackle loaner program and youth fishing clinics twice a week in summer — genuinely one of the best places in the state to put a kid on their first catfish.
Fish the eddies and current breaks, watch the flow rates before you launch, and give nesting birds on the sandbars their space. This is big-river fishing with a wilderness feel, forty minutes from Sioux City.
