You don’t need a drift boat or a guide to catch trout on the North Platte in Nebraska — you need to find the diversion dam at the lower end of Lake Ogallala. Below it, roughly a mile of river holds rainbows and browns that escape from the lake, and three rock weirs form the kind of deep holding pools trout love.
The fishing is best in summer when irrigation flows run high, and it stays good through fall and winter whenever there’s flow. Access is good and public, which is more than you can say for most Nebraska trout water. Very little stocking happens here; the population is essentially the lake’s overflow, refreshed constantly.
Pair it with Lake Ogallala itself for a full day: trout the lake in the morning, work the weir pools below the dam in the afternoon. It’s the most accessible wild-feeling trout fishing within an hour of I-80.
