Sutherland is the easy button of western Nebraska fishing: right off I-80 at Exit 158, 3,000 acres, and a genuinely diverse fishery. It’s a Nebraska Public Power District cooling reservoir for Gerald Gentleman Station, which gives it a quirk most lakes don’t have — the warm-water discharge keeps a portion ice-free and active deep into winter.
The fish card reads like a greatest hits: walleye, white bass, wipers, channel cats (ten-fish daily bag here, double the inland norm), smallmouth, and yellow perch. There’s an accessible fishing pier and a fish-cleaning station at the inlet, and all boats are allowed.
One serious caution from Game and Parks: that same heated discharge creates thin ice elsewhere on the lake, so ice anglers need to treat Sutherland with extra respect. In open water, it’s a straightforward, productive stop — the kind of lake you hit on the way somewhere and end up staying all day.
