Swanson is southwest Nebraska’s workhorse lake — big, clear, and full of fish that bite. The northern pike here get genuinely large, lurking in the flooded willows along the dam face, and the walleye population is both numerous and fat. But ask the regulars and they’ll tell you the white bass schools are the real show: when you find them, it’s as fast as fishing gets.
The Good Life Marina on the lake handles bait, tackle, gas, and groceries, which matters because you’re a long way from a big town out here. Two fish-cleaning stations, five ramps, and 3,000 acres of public hunting land around the western end round it out.
Winter is underrated at Swanson — the ice fishing for walleye and pike draws a loyal crowd. In summer, watch for the afternoon southwest wind; it can stack up whitecaps on the main lake in a hurry.
