Court House and Jail Rock is small-town Nebraska golf at its most welcoming. This public 9-holer opened in 1972 just south of Bridgeport, named for the towering Courthouse and Jail Rock formations that guided wagon trains on the Oregon Trail — you can see the same buttes and rocks from the course that the pioneers used as landmarks. The 3,039-yard, par-36 layout has well-kept fairways, scenic prairie views, and a genuine family atmosphere.
The detail that tells you everything: children 12 and under play free when accompanied by an adult, and annual memberships run a few hundred dollars. The clubhouse has dining, the regulars are glad to see you, and the whole operation feels like a community asset rather than a business.
Play it as a nine, loop it for 18, or stop in on your way to Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff — it’s right on Highway 88, in some of the most unexpectedly rugged country in Nebraska.
