Landmand is the “Grand Canyon of golf courses,” as one reviewer put it — a 580-acre behemoth in the Loess Hills of northeast Nebraska, designed by Rob Collins and Tad King (the Sweetens Cove duo) and opened in 2022. It plays to a par of 73 at 7,200 yards, but the number that matters is the greens: nearly 277,000 square feet of putting surface, with the 17th — a tribute to Alister MacKenzie’s Sitwell Park green — measuring over 30,000 square feet. It is fully public, and it has been ranked among Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public courses.
The backstory is pure Nebraska. The Andersen family has farmed the surrounding land for four generations; “Landmand” (the d is silent) is the Danish word for farmer. They started with a nine-hole course called Old Dane, dreamed bigger, and let King-Collins move two million cubic yards of earth to build this. On-site cabins and The Farmer’s Table restaurant make it an easy overnight.
Tee times are coveted and the course is walkable despite its scale. It’s about 20 minutes southwest of Sioux City — an easy add to any trip through northeast Nebraska.
