Monument Shadows has the best backdrop in Nebraska golf: the 800-foot bluffs of the Scotts Bluff National Monument towering over the course. This public 18-holer in Gering plays 4,800 to 6,800 yards depending on your tees, with manicured greens and fairways dotted with evergreens and cottonwoods, plus sand and water on several holes. It’s the friendly, affordable public alternative to the private club across the river.
Two things to know. First, you’re on Mountain Time — the course runs on America/Denver, an hour behind the rest of eastern Nebraska, which matters when you’re booking a morning tee time from out of town. Second, afternoons get breezy; locals play early.
Book online or by phone, a few days ahead for prime weekend slots. Afterwards, drive the summit road at the monument — the view back down at the course you just played is worth the trip alone.
