Sky View is golf on a piece of World War II history. The course sits on the defunct Alliance Army Airfield, which barracked 20,000 paratroopers during the war — the layout is flat and open, the fairways are lined with strings of pines and elms, and a large pond soaks up wayward shots on 9 and 10 right where the base water tower used to stand. The rough is dry hardpan in places, which is about as High Plains as it gets.
It’s a straightforward, honest public course: well-kept greens, shallow bunkers, no tee-time hassle, and green fees among the lowest you’ll find for 18 holes anywhere. Reviewers praise the narrow fairways and excellent greens — far better conditioned than you’d expect for the price.
The local advice is perfect: if your round goes sideways, drive north of town to Carhenge to reset your mood. Alliance makes a great overnight on a Panhandle golf swing between Scottsbluff and the Sandhills.
