The Prairie Club is one of the Midwest’s first remote destination golf clubs, founded by Paul Schrock about 17 miles south of Valentine in the heart of the Sandhills. It has two championship courses, both ranked among Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public: the Dunes, a Tom Lehman/Chris Brands design routed on a six-mile loop across 600 acres of blowouts and sand hills, and the Pines, a Graham Marsh design that transitions from open prairie into a forest of ponderosa pines lining Snake River Canyon. A third course, the par-3 Horse Course by Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford, sits on the canyon rim.
It’s semi-private and open to non-members, with stay-and-play packages including the lodge, dining, and practice facilities. September and early October are the sweet spot — less wind, pleasant temperatures, and the prairie at its best.
Getting here is the commitment: five-plus hours from Denver or Omaha, down Highway 97 through some of the emptiest, prettiest country in America. That’s the point. Book the lodge, play 36 a day, and don’t rush the drive.
