Wilderness Ridge doesn’t look like Nebraska, and that’s the point. This Jim White design from 2001, open to public play, runs through granite boulder-lined ponds and streams with actual waterfalls, more than 6,000 planted trees, and bentgrass fairways — all anchored by a 37,000-square-foot log-and-stone lodge that feels like a mountain resort dropped south of Lincoln. Visit Nebraska calls it the most unique golf course in the state, and it’s hard to argue.
The golf is real: an 18-hole championship course at 7,107 yards plus a 9-hole executive track, home to the Nebraska Golf Academy — Lincoln’s only year-round practice facility — and the University of Nebraska golf teams. It plays firmer and faster than most parkland courses, and the prairie wind is always a factor.
Public tee times are available, so unlike most courses of this caliber, you can just book and go. It’s six miles south of downtown Lincoln, an easy day trip from Omaha.
