Carhenge is what happens when a Nebraska farmer-artist decides to honor his father’s memory with 39 gray-painted cars arranged exactly like Stonehenge. Jim Reinders built it with family at a 1987 reunion on his father’s old homestead, and it has been drawing pilgrims to a gravel road north of Alliance ever since.
Locals will tell you the best light is at sunrise or sunset, when the gray hulks throw long shadows across the circle and the whole thing looks almost ancient. Don’t skip the Car Art Reserve in the adjacent field — the colorful, weirder sculptures are the unofficial second exhibit.
It’s free, open dawn to dusk every day of the year, and the Pit Stop gift shop opens in summer. Pair it with Fort Robinson or Toadstool for a full weird-western-Nebraska day.
