Chimney Rock gets the postcards, but Courthouse and Jail Rocks are the ones the pioneers saw first — and this pair is gloriously undeveloped. No visitor center, no fences, no admission: just a gravel road off Highway 88 south of Bridgeport, a parking area, and two massive sandstone sentinels you can walk right up to.

Courthouse Rock earned its name because it looks like a grand public building; Jail Rock got its name for standing next to it, smaller and plainer. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places, and emigrants mentioned them in journals almost as often as Chimney Rock, which is visible 20 miles to the northwest on a clear day.

There are no facilities at all — no water, no restrooms, no shade — so stock up in Bridgeport and bring everything. The last stretch is gravel and gets rough after rain. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular, and you will very likely have it to yourself.
