Bailey Yard is the largest railroad classification yard on Earth — 8 miles long, 10,000 railcars sorted a day — and the Golden Spike Tower puts you eight stories above it. From the open-air 7th-floor deck you can hear the hump in operation; the enclosed 8th floor gives you the full bird’s-eye layout with retired railroaders on hand to narrate.
The volunteer docents are the sleeper highlight. Many of them worked the yard, and they’ll tell you exactly what’s happening below — what’s cresting, what’s being built — with the kind of detail no exhibit panel can match.
Open daily, with longer summer hours. Admission is modest and the elevator makes it accessible. If you want trains in motion, mid-morning to late afternoon is the busiest window.
