The Homestead Act gave away 270 million acres and reshaped the continent, and this is where the Park Service tells that story β€” on an actual homestead claim outside Beatrice. The Heritage Center covers the full arc: the promise, the sod houses, the failures, the displacement of Native nations whose land it was. It’s more honest than you’d expect from a monument.

The grounds are the other half: the 1867 Palmer-Epard log cabin, the Freeman one-room schoolhouse, and three miles of trails through restored tallgrass prairie and bur oak woodland. It’s a genuinely pretty walk, especially in late summer when the prairie is at full height.

Admission is free, and the park is open daily 9 to 5. The rangers will also help you look up homestead records β€” if your family claimed land under the Act, bring a name and see what they find.
