Red Cloud is to American literature what Hannibal is to Mark Twain — except fewer people make the trip, which is their loss. The National Willa Cather Center runs guided tours of Cather’s restored childhood home plus six more sites from her life and fiction, and the 612-acre Cather Memorial Prairie south of town is never-plowed grassland you can walk.
Start at the Center in the restored 1885 Red Cloud Opera House — the same stage where Cather gave her high school graduation speech. The bookstore stocks the largest collection of Cather books and scholarship anywhere, and the permanent exhibit is genuinely well done even if you’ve never read her.
Tours run Tuesday through Saturday. If you read one book before going, make it My Ántonia — the prairie, the divide, the whole landscape will read differently afterward. The annual Spring Conference draws Cather scholars from around the world.
