Toadstool is Nebraska’s badlands — a moonscape of clay and sandstone eroded into balanced-rock “toadstools,” tucked inside the Oglala National Grassland about 20 miles of gravel road from the nearest pavement. The one-mile loop trail threads between the formations, and the fossils are right there in the walls if you look.
Here’s the local secret: the trail keeps going. The three-mile Bison Trail connects Toadstool to the Hudson-Meng bison bonebed, and the whole area sits under genuinely dark skies — campers come specifically for the stars. There are only a handful of first-come campsites, no water, and a train line about a mile off that you’ll hear at night.
Bring everything you need from Crawford, download a map before you leave cell range, and don’t try the gravel roads in heavy rain. Dawn turns the formations pink.
