The LUX is where Lincoln actually makes art, not just looks at it. Founded in 1977 as the University Place Arts Center and later renamed for benefactor and arts educator Gladys M. Lux, the nonprofit center runs five free gallery spaces showing local, regional, and national artists β plus a gift shop of artist-made pieces β alongside a full schedule of classes for kids and adults: pottery, printmaking, jewelry, glass, fiber. The BYOB Date Nights in the ceramics studio have a devoted following.
The thing that sets it apart is the Community Art Alley out back: public murals, a spot to take photos, and an open invitation to pick up a brush and add something yourself. Itβs the least intimidating art space in the city, and it shows β LUX artists have also been behind a wave of murals popping up around north Lincoln.
Galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 5, and admission is free. It anchors the First Friday Artwalk circuit in University Place; pair it with dinner in the neighborhood and youβve got a proper evening.
