The Nebraska History Museum is what a state history museum should be: three floors, tightly curated, and built around real objects rather than wall text. The collections run over 125,000 objects deep, and the galleries move from 12,000 years of Indigenous history through early statehood to rotating exhibits on Nebraska pop culture, sound, screen, and sports. The third floor has a family play area that keeps the kids happy while adults read the oral histories β the small audio clips and personal letters are the parts that stick with you.
Itβs part of the Museums for All program, with reduced admission for SNAP recipients, and college students and History Nebraska members get in free. The gift shop is worth a stop too: Nebraska authors, regional photography, locally made keepsakes.
Open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sundays and Mondays. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for kids 5 to 18, free under 5. Pair it with the State Capitol a few blocks south for the full downtown-history afternoon.
