Opened in 1993, El Museo Latino was the first museum in the Midwest dedicated to Latino art and history, and it remains one of the most important cultural institutions in South Omaha. The exhibitions rotate through Latin American art, Chicano history, and the story of the neighborhood around it.
What makes it special is how rooted it is. This isn’t a museum that happens to be in South Omaha — it’s a museum of South Omaha, shaped by the Mexican and Central American families who built the neighborhood. The murals and community programming carry as much weight as the gallery shows.
It’s on 25th Street in the commercial heart of South Omaha, surrounded by some of the best Mexican food in the city. Pair a visit with lunch nearby and you’ve got one of the most rewarding afternoons in Omaha.
