Fontenelle Forest is the antidote to everything loud about a city trip. Founded in 1913, itβs one of the largest private nature preserves in the country β 2,100 acres of oak forest, wetlands, and Missouri River floodplain, with 24 miles of trails ranging from easy boardwalks to actual hills.
The treetop boardwalk through the canopy is the signature experience, and the Raptor Woodland Refuge β with rescued hawks, owls, and eagles β is the part kids talk about afterward. Birders know it as one of the best migration stops in the region.
Itβs in Bellevue, about 15 minutes south of downtown Omaha. Give it a half day. The trails are well-marked, the visitor center is genuinely nice, and in October the fall color on the bluffs is spectacular.
