This is the thing people fly into Omaha specifically to see, and it earns it. The Desert Dome β the worldβs largest indoor desert β sits under a glazed geodesic dome with 84-degree air and actual sand dunes, and the Scott Aquarium takes you through a 70-foot shark tunnel with sea turtles gliding overhead. Itβs the rare marquee attraction that actually lives up to its reputation.
Plan for a full day and wear real shoes; this place is bigger than it looks on the map. The Lied Jungle and the nocturnal Kingdom of the Night are the two exhibits locals name when theyβre trying to impress out-of-towners. Weekday mornings are the move β weekends and summer days get packed, and the Desert Dome turns into a genuine sauna by afternoon.
Practical stuff: itβs south of downtown, easy to reach off I-80. Food inside is standard zoo fare, so eat before you come or plan on the Old Market after. If you only have one Omaha stop, this is the defensible choice.
