Lauritzen is the quiet counterweight to the zoo — 100 acres of gardens on the river bluffs south of downtown, and somehow half of Omaha hasn’t been. The model railroad garden is the crowd-pleaser, with G-scale trains winding through miniature landscapes, but the rose garden in June and the woodland trails are what keep locals coming back.
The conservatory is the winter play: tropical plants and orchids under glass when it’s ten below outside. Spring brings the daffodils and tulips, and the whole place smells like it. It’s genuinely peaceful in a way few city attractions manage.
It’s right off I-80, close to the zoo, so the two make a natural same-day pair if you’re ambitious. The gardens host concerts and events in summer — check the calendar before you go, because a Friday night show here is one of Omaha’s better evenings out.
