Chadron is where Nebraska’s state park system started, and it still feels like the original: ponderosa pine, rugged buttes, and a canyon quiet you don’t expect this far east of the Rockies. The park celebrated its centennial in 2021, and a century in, it remains the classic family-vacation park — cabins with linens and kitchenettes, a trading post, a pool, paddleboats on the lagoon, and Chadron Creek running through it with trout.
The real asset is the trail system. Park trails connect directly to the Pine Ridge trails of the adjacent Nebraska National Forest, opening up more than 100 miles of hiking and mountain biking through some of the most distinctive country in the state. It’s also genuinely good wildlife country — deer, turkeys, and the occasional elk.
Come in fall when the hardwoods turn and the crowds thin, or in summer for the full old-fashioned vacation program: archery, black-powder demos, buffalo stew cookouts for groups. Reserve cabins well ahead; the 22 go fast.
