Lake Maloney is a Nebraska Public Power District regulation reservoir that happens to double as one of the easiest overnight stops on I-80. Five miles south of North Platte, the lake offers 126 campsites — 56 Electric Plus, 70 basic — all first-come, first-served, with a self-registration Iron Ranger (cash or check) and a 14-day-in-30 limit. Cross-country travelers have been pulling in here for decades; it’s the spontaneous stop, no reservation needed.
For a power-district lake, the amenity list is solid: two unsupervised swimming beaches, coin-op showers, a dump-and-fill station, two boat ramps, a handicap-accessible fishing pier, hiking trails, even a disc golf course. The lake itself is known for walleye, white bass, channel cat, and crappie.
It’s not fancy — regulars will tell you the facilities aren’t modern — but it’s shaded, spacious, and five minutes from a town with everything. That’s the honest appeal: a reliable, cheap, no-planning lake stop with enough to do for a weekend. Birdie Lane golf course sits right nearby for anyone mixing pursuits.
