The fishing listing covers the lake itself; this is the park that wraps it. Lake McConaughy SRA is the access machine for Nebraska’s largest reservoir: seven campgrounds, full-service and electric-plus sites, 50-amp service, and beaches that look nothing like what people expect from Nebraska — when the water’s up, the sand and the surf-like waves honestly feel like an ocean that lost its way.
Seven campgrounds means there’s a tier for every style, from full hookups at Cedar View to primitive beach camping on the north shore. During peak season the developed campgrounds are reservation-only, 180 days out, and the July weekends sell through — regulars book like they mean it. The visitor center just before Kingsley Dam is worth the stop on your way in; the staff there will tell you which campgrounds are open and where the beach is widest this week.
Know this before you go: the lake’s level swings year to year, and with it the shoreline. Low water moves the beaches far from some campgrounds and drops the boat ramps’ usefulness — check conditions first. The Cedar View campground also sits close to the train tracks, which run loud all night; it’s the known trade-off regulars accept. Go in September, when the crowds thin, the water’s still warm, and the sunsets off the west dam are the best free show in western Nebraska.
