Sherman is Nebraska’s second-largest reservoir by capacity, and its recreation area is deliberately unpolished: 360 dirt sites spread across open ground with minimal shade, showers, a dump station, and a recently redone electric RV campground with 30/50-amp service. That’s the split personality of the place — half rustic first-come sites where you make your own loop with friends, half modern electric pads for the RV crowd.
The honest notes come from campers: this place caters to RVs on summer weekends, so tent campers should pick their spot carefully; tent camping is better on weekdays when the generators stay home. Holiday weekends fill the first-come sites by midweek. In fall, though, this is one of the best camping windows in the state — highs in the 50s to 70s, fewer crowds, golden prairie grass, and fishing that sharpens as the water cools. Waterfowl hunters know it too; pheasant and deer draw an October-November crowd.
The Bureau of Reclamation built the dam; Game and Parks runs recreation. There’s a marina (Trade Winds) for supplies, an archery range, and boat ramps — but the real reason locals keep coming back is that Sherman is the kind of big-water park where a weekday in September still feels like your own. Loup City, five miles away, has groceries and fuel.
