Big Muddy started in 2012 when a group of young growers took over vacant lots in Gifford Park and started farming them — raised beds where the soil needed it, in-ground where it didn’t, all organic methods. It’s run as a collective, and it shows: the farm is as much about food sovereignty and skill-sharing as it is about the vegetables.
The CSA is the way in — produce pickups through the season — plus a market stand and sales to local restaurants. They also run a full-season Aspiring Farmer Fellowship, a residency that trains new urban farmers by actually farming. If you want your grocery dollars to stay in a North Omaha neighborhood and train somebody’s kid to farm, this is the CSA.
