Marty and Karen Bredthauer have been raising bison south of Broken Bow since 1994 — about 100 animals living on 320 acres of rolling pasture, kept in family groups and weaned on the cow’s own schedule. They’re one of a small number of bison operations in North America certified both Grassfed and Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World.
Their protocol is strict: no grain, no antibiotics, no hormones, no vaccinations, with organic apple cider vinegar and mineral supplements keeping the herd healthy. The animals live their whole lives on pasture and are field-harvested rather than trucked anywhere. Order online or watch for the Log Cabin mobile store, which makes monthly Saturday runs to Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, and McCook — and occasionally to Omaha and Lincoln. Visitors are welcome at the ranch with a call ahead.
